Did you know that heating and cooling account for nearly half of energy consumption? Here are the top stories shaping the clean heat transition this month.

In the second quarter of 2024, the EU imported 13 billion cubic metres (bcm) of Russian gas, for a total of 26 bcm to date this year. Meanwhile, quarterly imports of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) are down to 9.5 bcm, for a year-to-date total of 22 bcm. 25% of EU gas is used for household heating and cooling.

Policymakers must tackle the massive drop in heat pump sales, which saw a 47% fall in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to the Reform Institute. The Reform Institute’s latest report identified ‘seven sins’ for national heat pump policies which are delaying the clean heat transition.

Fossil fuel boilers are a serious risk to health and safety in our homes. At present, 83 per cent of EU homes rely on fossil fuel and biomass for heating and cooking. Research by Coalition members EEB suggests that, each year, domestic appliances using these fuels are responsible for approximately 900 to 1,800 hospital-treated injuries.

Heat pumps from Bosch, Carrier, Daikin, Johnson Controls, Lennox, Midea, Rheem, and Trane Technologies have passed the latest cold climate test issued by the US Department of Energy. Heat pump units reliably provided residential heat for a full year, even during the coldest winter periods. The field tests were conducted in 23 residential sites located across 10 US states and 2 Canadian provinces.
